Standing With Ukraine in Prayer and Worship

Why do the heathen rage and the people imagine a vain thing? This is the first part of this prophecy from Ps 2. One of the speakers in this psalm is David the Psalmist (2;1-3). God had promised His son would sit upon his throne to rule over the tribes of Israel and over all the nations but looking through time what David sees is something quite different. Nations are in rebellion, there are all kinds of anarchy and lawlessness. Just as we do today when things are not lining up for us according to the words of promise and we are perplexed over the contradictions. The question that has been asked through time is asked again here, “why”. It can also be seen as a rhetorical question showing David’s outrage that the nations would have the audacity to mount a revolt against God and His kingdom.

David’s question, rhetorical or otherwise is answered with the sound of laughter from God the Father, and we see in the scriptures that the ludicrous rebellion of man is often met with laughter in the heavens. Ps 37:13 “the Lord laughs at the wicked…” 59;8 “but you oh Lord laugh at them….” The Son confirms that his rule is in no doubt, He is celebrated on high as God’s treasured Son. There is no need for David to be perplexed over the seeming inconsistency, the outcome is guaranteed.

“Why do the heathen rage and the people imagine a vain thing”? The Hebrew Commentary describes their plot as one that is in progress, but it is in vain. Their actions show the worthless and morally bankrupt state of their character” and the Psalm emphasises that their rebellion will fail.

Give us this nation

and the nations as our legacy

I thought of this Psalm again this morning as I reflected on the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. The pain and suffering of the individuals cannot be fully understood by those of us who have not experienced the ravages of war. However, we come to this crisis knowing that God has a great plan for this nation. “It’s a plan of good and not of evil to give them a future and a hope,” to give them His expected end. (Jer 29:11). In the face of man’s rebellion, the fierce fighting, the plotting, the vain imaginings, “God enthroned merely laughs at them; the sovereign one mocks their madness…with the fierceness of his fiery anger he settles the issue…” (Ps 2:4 TPT) just as it was settled over the King that would sit on the throne.

Despite the tumult and the propaganda God has settled the issue over Ukraine and we as the body of Christ take our stand and declare “show your power” and “give us this nation and the nations as our legacy” (Ps 2:8 TPT paraphrased).

None of this is new to Him who sits on the throne, and He had already sent a word ahead of time to aid us in this and every warfare we encounter. Prayer For Ukraine

You are the only God, the living God, the one who broke the strongholds over us and raised us up out of bondage. We open our mouths with a mighty decree, that you are the God of the whole earth and beside you, there is no other. You are the refuge and strength of Ukraine; you are in the midst of her; she shall not be moved. You will help her when morning dawns. The nations rage, the kingdoms fall, you will lift your voice and the enemy will melt away. You are the commander of heavens armies; you are on their side. You will be exalted over the nations and over the earth. God of Jacob you are their protector and deliverer. Amen!
